While I realize I'm reviewing a shop in money-crazy corporate America, I feel the need to say this: I can't even begin to count times that shops in other countries have assembled entire bikes from the shipping box for me without letting me pay, or shops that have given my bike a better tune up than Brookfield Cycle and Fitness, free of charge, when I only asked if I could borrow their bike pump. I understand that there's a cost to running a business, especially in Brookfield. I get that a lot of profit probably comes from services. But $85 for a tune up that doesn't tune anything up? I tell everyone I know to look elsewhere for all bike services now. I'm disappointed that it's come to this, because Brookfield Cycle and Fitness is the most "little guy" of "the little guys" for bike shops in the area, but my wallet cannot afford to support them if I'm not getting the services I'm paying for.

Friendly and well priced. Support your local bike shop! Great service, friendly folks my kind of bike shop. They were very helpful with repairs would recommend!

Don't get me wrong, the people who work here seem very nice. They are a decently stocked store. I feel like they know what they're talking about. But there's a huge deal-breaker for me:

It's definitely worth the drive to this bike store. The men working there seem to go out of their way to be friendly and helpful. My husband bought fat-tire bikes for himself and our son from them last summer and the service and customer care we have received over the past year has been exceptional. I bought a used bike and they helped me customize it to make it comfortable and fit me. Part of making it more comfortable was changing the seat. They told me to try out the new seat for a while, and if even after a few months I didn't like it to bring it back and they would exchange it for a different type. We live by a few other local bike shops that are good, but we will still make the drive to go to Brookfield Cycle and Fitness because we think it's even better.

I don't pay much attention to bike costs, so I can't say anything about the price of the actual bikes, but I know what a tune up should look like. I have lived in a number of places around the world, and I can say that I have never been charged so much for a low quality "tune up" anywhere. I was hit by a car (no severe injuries) while riding my bike, and wanted to have a professional take a look at it to make sure there was nothing I missed. They would only take it in as a tune up, for me to pick up in a few days. There wasn't much to tune up, but I got to pay $85 for them to take a look. They didn't put grease on the chain, they didn't replace the more than slightly worn break pads, they didn't do anything about the loud cranking noise that happened when the bike shifted from 3rd down to 2nd gear. They didn't even wipe the frame, so there was grease all over the place as I rode it home. My mom has taken the same bike in three years in a row, each time pointing out a derailer problem, and each time the bike has been returned no different than before. What exactly does an $85 tune up give you if it doesn't even provide the basics? A quick google search of "how much does a bike tune up cost" turns up an average of $30-$75. $75 is on the high end according to everything I've read, and that's for a full comprehensive bike tune up. What me, my mom, and my dad have gotten these past 8 or so years have all been beyond sub-par for $85.

For reference of other Wisconsin shops providing quality service for a reasonable fee: my bike chain was horribly rusty when I was in Appleton. I was certain I needed to replace it, and walked into Appleton Bicycle Shop and told them that. They said no, you just really need to oil the chain. They sold me a $3.75 lube, helped put it on the chain for me, and wiped the frame and seat for me, no additional charge. (And I kept the bottle of lube for future use). My sister has stopped by Beloit Bicycle Company a few times because her gears weren't shifting properly, and they didn't charge her anything for the prompt, within a few minutes, service.

Friendly and experienced! One of the guys was able to do the repairs on the spot. The prices are extremely fair, and we had a great chat about bikes what kind of model i could look at upgrading to in the future.

My parents instilled upon me the idea that you should "always support the little guys". Hence, Brookfield Cycle and Fitness was the place my family bought pretty much every bike growing up.

For a local bike shop, I would have expected an owner or employee to be willing to glance over the bike for me either free of charge or for a small fee, especially after I told them I was hit by a car while riding it and just needed someone to quick look at it. By small fee, I mean $5 would be reasonable, as what I'm asking for only takes a minute. If there were broken parts, sure, charge me to replace those. The shop has every right to charge for the parts and the time/labor that goes in to replacing them. Instead, I was gouged the same way American hospitals charge people for services I wasn't actually provided with.

Getting ready to ride the Katie Trail I needed some tires and tubes. Not only I got fair prices but Tom ensured me that the Katie trail was a good choice to ride with my husband.. (Who finds ways to fall off his bike every time we ride) ((Marathon runners usually make for challenged bicyclist))
